Our Model
At Home Roots Foundation, we believe that breaking the cycle of poverty requires a holistic and sustainable approach that addresses both women’s economic empowerment and children’s education. Our unique two-generational model is designed to create long-lasting change by improving the well-being of entire households, empowering women as economic drivers while ensuring that their children receive the education and life skills they need to succeed.
Focusing on Women & Children
Research shows that when women have the resources to earn and manage income, they tend to reinvest a larger portion into their households compared to men. This directly benefits their children, improving access to food, education, healthcare, and overall well-being. In Haiti, where 45% of families are led by women—and these women-led households are often disproportionately affected by poverty—our model targets this vulnerable demographic. By supporting women economically, we are not only helping them achieve financial independence but also ensuring that their children grow up in more stable and nurturing environments.
Our Two-Generational Approach
We address poverty from two interconnected angles:
- Women’s Economic Empowerment:
We provide women with access to affordable loans, grants, business training, and ongoing coaching. This support enables them to start or expand small businesses, generate income, and build sustainable livelihoods. As these businesses grow, they lift entire families out of poverty, creating a ripple effect that strengthens the entire community.
- Children’s Education and Development:
Simultaneously, we invest in the education of children from these households. We offer scholarships, tutoring, life skills training, and mentorship programs to ensure that children not only attend school but excel academically and develop the skills they need for the future. By focusing on education, we are tackling the root causes of generational poverty and ensuring that the next generation has the tools to thrive.
A Proven Model in Action
This model has been tested and refined over seven years of dedicated work in Haiti. Through close collaboration with local communities, we have built programs that are deeply responsive to the real needs of women and children. Our success lies in listening to the voices of those we serve and designing solutions that empower them to create lasting change. Today, the impact of our two-generational approach is evident in the increased income of women entrepreneurs and the improved educational outcomes of their children.
Why It Works
By focusing on both economic empowerment for women and education for their children, we tackle poverty at the household level. This holistic strategy ensures that progress is not only made but sustained across generations. As women gain financial independence and children receive quality education, the entire family becomes more resilient, breaking free from the cycle
of poverty.
At Home Roots Foundation, we are committed to creating a future where women and children in Haiti are empowered to reach their full potential. Through our two-generational model, we are building stronger households, more resilient communities, and a brighter future for Haiti.
